“Nnamdi Kanu: Justice Must Not Become a Tool for Ethnic Triumph or National Division” By Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo
The recent reactions in some quarters celebrating the conviction and continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu raise serious concerns about the direction of national discourse and unity in Nigeria.
Nigeria is a constitutional democracy founded on the principles of justice, fairness, and equality before the law. No criminal proceeding or conviction no matter how politically sensitive should become a basis for ethnic celebration, regional triumphalism, or the deepening of divisions among Nigerians.
The case of Nnamdi Kanu is not merely a legal matter; it has evolved into a significant national issue touching on constitutional rights, self-determination debates, national cohesion, and the perception of justice across different regions of the federation. It must therefore be handled and discussed with the highest level of national responsibility and sensitivity.
It is deeply troubling when any group appears to celebrate the imprisonment of a fellow Nigerian primarily through ethnic or sectional lenses. Such reactions risk reinforcing the perception that the justice system is being viewed not as an impartial arbiter but as an instrument within broader political and ethnic struggles. This perception, whether accurate or not, is dangerous for national stability.
Nigeria cannot progress where the suffering or incarceration of one citizen becomes the source of joy for another ethnic or regional bloc. Justice must never be reduced to a contest of domination between North and South, Muslim and Christian, or any ethnic nationality. Once justice is interpreted through such divisive frameworks, the foundation of national unity becomes severely weakened.
The true test of Nigeria’s democracy lies in its ability to uphold the rule of law while preserving the dignity and rights of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political persuasion. Every Nigerian whether from the North, South, East, or West deserves equal protection under the Constitution and equal respect in national discourse.
At this critical time, Nigerians must resist narratives that deepen division and instead embrace dialogue, constitutionalism, and mutual respect. The future of Nigeria depends not on the humiliation or suppression of any group, but on the collective commitment to justice, equity, and peaceful coexistence.
Nigeria must rise above ethnic triumphalism and recommit itself to the ideals of one nation governed by law, fairness, and shared destiny.
